*Visual representation of music.
“The VJ saved my life last night”
Be it a narrative, be it appropriated material taken from films or TV, be it abstract (hippy or minimalist), or generated from script, whatever it is, it adds to sensory overload to club goers. When their favourite song plays and they’re on the dance floor, construction, deconstruction and re-synthesis provide visual translation of the emotional content of the music.
Visual representation of music can be traced back to 17th century, but significant development can be found throughout experimentation in Bauhaus where Klee and Kandinsky developed their own theories and praxis related to visual representation of music, Walt Disney’s Fantasia, Fischinger and Whitney brothers, among others, all the way to late 80s club scene and 90s DIY, everybody’s an artist approach.
Larisa Blazic studied architecture at Belgrade University and MA Hypermedia Course at the University of Westminster, London. In the 90s, became increasingly involved in an interdisciplinary approach towards art and architecture, successfully combining architectural design with video and sound. She participated in various art projects, collaborations and exhibited worldwide. Currently teaching at the University of Westminster and developing several interactive installations.
